Foundry Town Survivors Debut EP

A generational flood seen through the eyes of youth. The tenuous borderline between dreams and reality. Unity of purpose during the most desperate wartime hours. The mystery and wonder of a childhood that wasn’t defined by technology.

These are just a few of the scenes that Foundry Town Survivors bring to life on their latest EP — a colorful, unusual, emotionally forthright, and impeccably detailed exercise in musical storytelling from a pair of master craftsmen. The EP, which will be released on November 5, 2021, establishes the Survivors as songwriters with a knack for wide-screen narrative. Call them an Americana act, and you won’t be wrong: these are profoundly American stories brought to life by Motor City musicians with strong roots and deep knowledge of musical traditions. Call them classic rockers, and that fits, too. You’ll hear echoes of Petty and Springsteen, Dire Straits and Dylan, Rodney Crowell, Motown soul, even a pinch of outlaw country.

But at heart, the Foundry Town Survivors are short-story writers. The fact that they’re also outstanding musicians with an impeccable sense of melody, meter, and perspective is almost beside the point. Everything you’ll hear on the Foundry Town Survivors EP — from the carefully selected guitar tones to the propulsive rhythms to the clear, beautifully recorded vocals — is designed to advance the storytelling and deepen the listener’s experience of the songs. As songwriters, Mark Tomorsky and Tommy Johnsmiller are specialists in total immersion: their songs put you right there on the bank with the floodwaters rising, there in the heart of battle with the soldiers, there witnessing an intimate statement of unconditional love… They paint these pictures with exquisite attention to detail: sonic, lyrical, temporal, emotional.

Only writers with genuine lived experience could write songs that ring as true as those on Foundry Town Survivors do. Tomorsky and Johnsmiller have powerful imaginations and good memories, too. They draw masterfully from their childhoods, their interactions with the towns where they were raised and the cities where they lived, and their own relationships with partners and with each other.

Both musicians have spent years in the music business — they’ve been part of the legendary Michigan music scene in the acclaimed jazz-rock combo Vantage Point!, and they’ve toured and collaborated with artists from all over. The Foundry Town Survivors EP is the culmination of all the projects they’ve ever done and the crowning achievement of two lives dedicated to music, storytelling, and compassion.

Join with the Survivors on a journey through the many worlds of Foundry Town, where past, present, and future merge.

Mississippi Rising

Mama shook me from my sleep
Get dressed boy
Don’t be slow
The waters gettin’ deep

If we don’t run we’re on our own
The power’s gone
There are no streets
The water is so cold

The Mississippi’s risin’
Drowning all the land
I’m not afraid of dying
But you can’t stop the river
Can’t stop the river with your hand

Mama said our house was gone
Covered by
Mud and clay
As night became the dawn

I could not believe my eyes
The town I knew
Just disappeared
I watched the river rise

The Mississippi’s risin’
Drowning all the land
I’m not afraid of dying
‘Cause you can’t stop the river
Can’t stop the river with your hand

We moved to higher ground
My family and most the town
We all hoped and prayed
But some were never found

The Mississippi’s risin’
Drowning all the land
I’m not afraid of dying
‘Cause you can’t stop the river
Can’t stop the river with your hand

Seven Souls

Six miles high
In the nighttime sky
Seven souls go flyin’
Dancing on a wing
A tire’s christening
And a tin can to die in

Coming down
Wheels on the ground
Lucky dice survive
Seven souls are alive

Fresh off the farm
No time to be alarmed
It’s all about surviving
Rabbit’s foot in hand
They honor the command
Spitting on the tail fin

Coming down
Wheels on the ground
Hearts are revived
Seven souls are alive

Any given day
Luck could slip away
FTR in a tailspin
Thank your lucky stars
Pass out the cigars
Seven souls defying

Coming down
Wheels on the ground
Not their day to die

Foundry Town

There was a boy
Straight and tall
Living was simpler then

A shining lake
Train tracks rest
Magic if you were 10

Pennies on the track
Watch them crushing flat
As trains go rushing by

Dawn to dusk
In packs of three
When we owned July

In the shadow of the foundry
By the docks on the lake
These were our boundaries
Imagination was escape

Cattails thrive
The shore was alive
Near the paper mill

Building forts
In the brush
Took a certain skill

Go karts made from scratch
Racing down the walks
Fueling illusions

Urban jungle
Search for treasure
Among the ruins

In the shadow of the foundry
By the docks on the lake
These were our boundaries
Imagination was escape

Now there is a man
He’s standing gray with time
He knows that world is gone
But the memories are sublime

In the shadow of the foundry
By the docks on the lake
These were our boundaries
Imagination was escape

Everything's Okay

It took me by surprise
Crazy how time flies
I wonder how I’ll get back home
Before I open my eyes

Everything’s okay
Just watch me fly away

This must be a dream
There’s things I’ve never seen
I don’t wanna stay here alone
And get caught in between
Everything’s okay
Just watch me fly away

I see some light ahead
Hanging by a thread
If I don’t make it back to you
Remember what I said

Everything’s okay
Just watch me fly away

I'll See You Through

When there’s trouble
I’ll be with you
If you suffer
I’ll see you through

If you’re walking through the valley of doubt
Shadows cast their spell down on the ground
I’ll send you courage that you can share
Deliver answers to your prayers

When you’re worried
I’ll be with you
If you’re hurting
I’ll see you through

You feel surrounded with no way home
The night moves closer, feeling so alone
I’ll build a road across the frozen sea
Bring you comfort take you back with me

When there’s heartache
I’ll be with you
If there’s sadness
I’ll see you through

If you’re walking through the valley of doubt
Shadows cast their spell down on the ground
I’ll build a road across the frozen sea
Bring you comfort take you back with me

When there’s trouble
I’ll be with you
If you suffer
I’ll see you through
When you’re worried
I’ll be with you
If you’re hurting
I’ll see you through
When there’s heartache
I’ll be with you
To ease your sadness
I’ll see you through

Hopes and Dreams

On a deserted highway
Time is moving slow
He pulls to the shoulder
For a bootleg load
Tonight should be the last show
Checked the money by his side
He knew he shouldn’t trust them
When something crossed his mind

Welcome to the land
Welcome to the land of hopes and dreams

Two lights flash in the distance
He finished off his smoke
Lights were getting closer
It began to snow
They pulled up beside him
Heard thunder explode
He knew he shouldn’t trust them
They left him in the cold

Welcome to the land
Welcome to the land of hopes and dreams

He was brought up strong
He was brought up right
Knew good from bad
Knew when to fight

On a deserted highway
Time is moving slow
Willed his eyes to open
Knew he had to go
It was going to be easy
A couple of times they said
You’ll make a ton of money
He lit a cigarette

Welcome to the land
Welcome to the land of hopes and dreams
